Left click on your desktop and it'll go into your preferences (depends on your OS). From there you can change the resolution.

In Windows, go to the Control Panel and seek for Screen options. On the Settings tab you will find resolution options. Test these different options and when ready, click OK.

First check your basic settings on your monitor, such as your contrast, your brightness, your centering. After that look into the video card and driver settings.

All monitor's have a default resolution they work best with. Usually the bigger the monitor, the higher the resolution can be. Wide's screen resolution are always higher on the width. You can set the resolution you want in the operating system. In order to use wide screen properly you will most likely have to have a newer video card.
