You can try the following to troubleshoot the laptop monitor issue. 1) See if it works with an external monitor 2) Try adjusting the brightness 3) Is the laptop in sleep mode? 4) reboot the laptop 5) If all else fail, you may have a connection problem to the graphics card

First, try checking your video card settings. The resolution in the video card setting should match with the monitor. Then check your laptop with an external display. If it succeeds then buy an external monitor change your internal LCD. Changing the LCD will cost more. An external LCD monitor can be good deal for that.

You'll need to check to make sure the connection for the screen and your motherboard is still good. If that isn't the issue chances are your LCD screen is simply dead which means new laptop.

It sounds like the laptop screen itself is having problems. One thing you can do, to make sure it's the screen, is to hook up and external vga monitor. This is the blue cord on another monitor, will plug into the laptop.
