Tiger Balm patches, pop one on there and relax for a while. The balm will take the pain away, the rest will let it heal.

Take rest. Try to lie straight for as much time as possible. Apply a locally availabe counterirritant ointment. Take pain medication. If pain does not resolve in a few days, consult your doctor.

Slow and careful stretching helps quite a bit. If it's your trapezius, try holding your arms out on either side, palms down--making a T shape and 1) raising them up from that position and 2) bringing them in front. You should always check with your doctor if you're concerned.

I would recommend Icy Hot or a heating pad. They both work great. Just relax and let them work, and make sure not to strain yourself more.

Just give it rest and lay on a heat pad whenever you can so that you can relieve the tension or strain that is in your upper back. If after a week or so nothing seems to work and you have given it rest you will want to see a doctor so see if it is more serious.

You want to lift as little as possible and constantly stretch the back muscles. It should heal in a few days if not you might need an x-ray.

I would apply ice and if that didn't help, I would use warm compresses until you could get to the doctor. The doctor will give you muscle relaxants to ease the pain and some pain medicine. Do not pick up anything that is heavy and try not to put any strain on your back until the doctor says it's OK.
