Traditionally, god parents were the people that would care for the child should the parent's pass away. Today, this is typically taken care of in wills. And, today, a god parent is largely a symbolic position associated with gift giving.

Traditionally godparents were expected to replace the parents when they were not able to care for the god-child anymore, in case of parents' death for example. Godparents were also expected to look after the religious education of the god-child and accompany the child at mass and each of the sacraments.

In Christian religions godparents were traditionally responsible for sponsoring a child's baptism ceremony, and more generally for looking after the child's religious education. There's also a vague understanding that godparents serve as guardians if the parents die or became unable to provide for their kids. Being named as a godparent carries has no formal legal obligation.
