Jack Kilby was probably the most important figure in the development of third generation computers. He devised the integrated circuit, which allowed computers to be much smaller. The fact that computers were made less bulky changed the way we use them. Instead of having realtivly limited computing power in a given area, much more of this resouce was avalible now.

IBM started the third generation computer around 1964 with the System 360. They are computers that use disk storage, integrated circuits, and online terminals. First generation computers used vacuum tubes and esoteric technology. Second generation computers were built between 1950-1965 and used transistor technology. There are five recognized generation of computers today, the five generation ending in 1993.
