The foundation should be shallow and constructed with reinforced concrete. It should be very strong so as to hold the building firmly in times of any calamities. In case of this the depth for foundation should be minimum 12 feet

The foundation needs to be deep enough to go below the frost line, to prevent frost heave. It should keep the wall material off the ground to prevent damp.

A typical house foundation is required to be suitable for the bearing pressure as indiacted by the house plans, generally 1,000 to 3,000 psf. In addition the foundation should rest below the frost intrusion level and be sufficiently wide to avoid excessive off-center loading.

The typical foundation requirements for a house are sand, cement, concrete, bricks, broken bricks, concrete mixture, etc. Levelling of soil after digging the same upto sufficient depth, so that the same is not much muddy or humid is also important. Otherwise, you could put small pieces of stones in the foundation.

It will depend upon the nature of soil where you are planning to lay foundation. General requirements for foundation in hard soil are, rubble stone, river sand, cement, and hard broken stone jelly. Sea sand or rubble stone powder also required for filling the gaps between rubble stones in foundation.
