Not suprisingly, it's related to the economy which has taken a beating in the past few years. Poverty levels were actually down early-2000's, then steadily came back up since then.

About 15% of the population is classified as below the poverty line. However, this number is 40% for families headed by single mothers with young children. The poverty rate is almost as high for illegal aliens and high school drop outs, because of low income levels. For two parent married families, it is less than 10%.
