The December 2009 issue of Smithsonian magazine has an article about Sam Osmanagich, who claims to have found the world's oldest pyramid (12,000 years old) in Visoko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, northwest of Sarajevo. Other archaelogists point to the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt as the oldest pyramid in the world.

The oldest pyramidal structures were called ziggurats, and were built in the Mesopotamian valley (modern Iraq and Iran) by the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians. The first Egyptian pyramid is the pyramid of Djoser, a step-pyramid built in the 27th century BC. The first sloped (or "true") pyramid was built for King Snefru at Medium, in the 26th century BC.
