What are the most scenic and interesting areas for walking in NYC and surrounding areas?

I'm not interested in touristy, crowded spots. Anywhere in the five boroughs is fine, as long as I can get there on the subway.

The best place in NYC for a calm and relaxing walk is Central Park. While entrances to Central Park around Columbus Circle can get crowded, I recommend entering the central park through the upper east side. Taking the subway to 79th Street will get you very close to some of the most scenic areas of the park

Central park Zoo is definately a must see and my favorite is the South Street Seaport. You can also eat really well in little Italy and China town. Times spaure is a mad house but lots of fun. FAO schwartz toystore is great if you have kids, with a ferris wheel inside the store
