Stainless steel is also known as corrosion-resistant steel. In normal steel, the iron get reacted with oxygen to form iron oxide, when exposed to air. But the stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium. chromium forms a layer of chromium oxide which prevent the iron from corrosion

Stainless steel is made of "steel" which is iron (Fe) treated with carbon (C) and chromium (Cr). Stainless steel must contain at least 10.5 percent chromium. Carbon is not a "metallic" element so the metallic elements that make up stainless steel is iron and chromium.
