The leading economies based on size are The United States, Japan, China, and Germany. You could also consider the European Union, of which German is part, which makes it the fourth largest economy. Based on growth rate, India, China, Russia, and Brazil are leading economies. Based on population, the leading countries are China and India.

"Based on population, the leading countries are China and India." This statement is untrue and misleading. The populations are larger, so "based on population" the economies would be extremely small. A country like Luxembourg would be a leading country based on population.  add a comment

I am pretty sure that the G8 countries (USA, Japan, Great Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Russia and Italy) are among those leading the world's economy. The European Union is also among these nations. And, I think China and India are also at the top of the list among emerging nations.
