Both individuals must have always wanted only a platonic relationship. As soon as one individual wants more, or if you've had more in the past, forget it. It no longer has the potential for being a good platonic relationship.

Communication is the number one component of any type of relationship. Other successful keys to a platonic relationship would be respect, understanding, caring, sensitivity, generousity and somebody who will always be there for you.

I think trust between two people and good communication skills are vital for a good and healthy platonic relationship. The two sort of go hand in hand; as you can't trust someone you can't talk to and you can't talk to someone about your feelings if you don't trust them.
