Looking for the early signs of emphysema can be life saving, but very hard to detect. Any changes in breathing are often ignored, but are one of the most telling early symptoms. These symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chronic asthma or bronchitis. Other symptoms include fatigues, dizziness, ankle swelling, weight loss, morning headaches, insomnia, and a distended chest.

The early signs of emphysema are wheezing, coughing, and tightness of the chest. Emphysema is a very serious condition and can cause serious lung problems and it needs to be treated as soon as possible by the doctor. If not, later in life you may need oxygen and other breathing treatments. The earlier its treated the better on your body.

Early signs include shortness of breath, mild cough ("smoker's cough"). Emphysema will show up on a chest x-ray and that is what is used for diagnosis. Later signs include fatigue, frequent respiratory infections, and unexplained weight loss. End stage emphysema symptoms include decreased oxygen levels in blood and increased carbon dioxide levels.

Another symptom is a cough with phlegmYou may shortly follow with weight loss, morning headache, and air hunger. Emphysema affects each person differently.
