As of July 2010, the federal government is the lender for all guaranteed student loans. Private lenders like Chase, Bank of America and other major financial institutions make loans for school based on credit worthiness. These loans are not subsidized and they are not guaranteed. Those are the only two options for student loans.

There are state, regional and national lenders (not organizations) who participate in the guaranteed student loan program (Stafford Loan) and PLUS loan program run by the U.S. governments. A school can be a lender as well (Direct Loan program.) There are other lenders who offer loans for school that are not subsidized or guaranteed; rather, they are credit-based.

Many places offer student loans or grants. First there are many financial aid programs. Banks such as Wells Fargo offer student loans. If you're of an ethnic background or minority there are many groups who offer student loans based on that. Really the money is there all over if you know where to look.

Many different organizations offer student loans but the best way to go is to stick with the ones guaranteed by the federal government.
