The law is divided into two parts: criminal and civil. A misdemeanor is a crime. It is a "lesser crime" than a felony, but nonetheless falls under the "criminal" side of the law.

In criminal law, cases may be resolved, in lowest order, starting at municipal ordinance (or ticket), unclassified misdemeanor up to a misdemeanor, and then various classes of felonies (usually Class I through Class A, A being the most serious). Misdemeanor convictions result in countay jail time; felonies in prison.
