What are the differences between a foundation and a non profit organization?

I am in the process of setting up a fund raising organization to help families with children who suffer from Sensory Processing disorder and am confused about if it should be a foundation or a non profit.

Essentially, the main difference in terms of what they actually do is that a foundation raises money to be disseminated to other organizations while a non profit organization uses their money to directly aid their mission. There are also legal differences that are codified by the IRS and which you should be aware of.

The term "Non-Profit Organization" was designed to differentiate between businesses and charities. Your foundation would be a non-profit organization if you apply for that designation and if you are doing solely charitable work.
