Motown, made famous by Barry Gordy, the music executive and mogul, is characterized by soulful baselines and working class or romantic themes. It is rhythm and blues sung soulfully by mostly African-American singers from poor backgrounds. It is all about Detroit--Motor City, hence Mo-Town.
