Fast Car - Tracy Chapman/ Christmas Songs! They're all made for beginners/ Time of your life - Greenday/ Public Domain Songs - Happy birthday etc. Once he can pick, strum and move both hands around efficiently he can move on to some more challenging pieces.

Choose songs that work with very basic chords. Start by learning songs that have between 4 and 5 chords. There are many "Magic Four Chords" books that are great!

At my wedding my brother surprised me by playing "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" by the White Stripes. It was one of the first songs he learned to play on his acoustic guitar at the age of 17 and it was simple and great.
