You could get her a set of monogramed towels or sheets. Probably anything with her initials because college means a good chance to get things mixed up. Money is always welcome or a pre-paid telephone card. Different kinds of snacks if she isn't dieting would work. A jar of change for washing machines is always appreciated.

For someone you are close to, a small piece of jewelry can be nice. A bracelet or simple necklace. For a smaller budget, try music downloads or trendy room decor.

A great gift is a digital photo frame, especially if you can pre-load it with some pictures she will enjoy. Another thing is to get something from the college she will be going to, such as a sweatshirt, etc. Or check with her parents: Does she have an alarm clock? Luggage? Basic tool set (they make "ladies' sets)?

An Itunes card is a good gift so they can download mp3's. You can buy Ipod speakers if they don't already have them, or you can buy them a nice book light that attaches to the book they are reading, it will come in handy if they have a roommate.

Money is always good. There are a lot of things that they need their first year. If you want to get more personal a laptop is very useful or matching bedding for her dorm.

Anything handmade is great: a quilt, a ceramic coffee mug, or a piece of jewelry would hold sentimental value to her.
