Question by  hbackman (50)

What are some tips for cutting a golden retrievers hair?

I don't know if people even give retrievers hair cuts, but during the summer I feel like my dog must be so hot, since he has so much hair. Should I take him to the groomer?

Do not cut your dog's hair. His coat serves to protect his skin from the elements and to keep him cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Brush him regularly to keep his coat healthy and free of mats, but don't cut his hair.

I know several people that get their pets fur shaved off during the hot summer months. If you decide to do this, please do take the dog to a groomer, they have the proper equipment to do the safely and effectively.

You certainly could take your dog to a groomer if you wanted to but I would recommend that you go to your local pet store such as Petsmart. They now have new combs out that thin out the undercoat of the fur. Works great and saves you money!

Golden Retrievers are known for their long hair and they are used to it and sometimes it actually protects them from the heat, but if you think he needs a haircut take him to a groomer so it is done right.

No need for a groomer. Invest in a Flowbee. Sure it's for people but I'm sure it will work on dogs.
