St. Augustine grass does not grow good in the shade. It is susceptible to grub worm damage and certain type of mildew.

Chinch Bugs are going to be the biggest problem with this type of grass. They suck the juices from the grass and cause a lot of damage to a lawn. During prolonged periods of rainfall St. Augustine grass will most likely display signs of root rot or Gray Leaf Spot (a type of fungus).
