With guitars, it's not always a specific brand that will hold value. Certainly older Gibsons, Fenders, and Gretschs hold a higher value than most others. However even the older, store brands or more massed produced guitars have become collectible. Original Hagstroms are valued much higher than the new Chinese ones

Any guitar that was owned my a famous guitarist will hold and gain value. Gibsons, especially, vintage Gibsons, hold their value and after so many years actually gain value. Other guitars that will hold their value are any kind of exotic or hard to find guitars. Good examples of these are customs made guitars and double neck guitars.

The true value of an instrument boils down to a few things: The level of craftsmanship involved, if the person who manufactured it is name brand, and if it's antiquated.
