I would go to Santa Cruz for sure down Highway 1. I would also consider driving over the Golden Gate Bridge to visit Mount Tamalpais State Park. You'll be so close to the City yet feel miles away.

Napa, California's wine country is a beautiful place to visit. There you can sample a variety of wines from the many wineries in the area. If you are interested in history, a trip to the gold country isi in order. Visiting towns such as Nevada City gives you a feel for what it was like during the California gold rush.

An excellent place to go is the Carrington Mansion south of San Francisco, also known as FILOLI. If I recall correctly there are tours of the place and it should be decorated for the holidays now. There are gardens, history and hiking trails so it has a little bit of something for everyone. Plus the mansion is just gorgeous.
