A diet low in salt, high in fiber, with lots of vegetables and fruits and whole grains and low in fat is ideal. Commonly, physicians recommend the Pritikin diet, or in milder cases of CHF, the Mediteranean diet.

For a patient with CHF it is important to limit the amount of salt in the diet. Excessive salt causes the body to retain fluid which can affect the pumping action of the heart. Generally, patients are advised not to consume more than 2 grams of salt a day.

The most important thing is that the diet is low in sodium. Depending on medications being taken, you may have to be careful about your potassium and grapefruit intake.
