Good knives are the most important for a chef, the highest quality that can be afforded should be purchased. Also several size mixing bowls, usually stainless steel are important. High quality pans and a good whisk are also important. I believe that more than tools (although the previously listed are indispensable) quality ingredients are necessary.

Knives, whisks and other tools are all important but perhaps the most important tools are your cooking vessels. It is important to have a very good relationship with your pans in order for your finished dishes to come out right. When it comes right down to it the best intentions will fail if you don't "know" your pans.

A good chef absolutely needs a good knife. Germany and Japan make the best ones. Other necessary ware are: a balloon whisk, dry towels, a chopping block, a good blender and mixer, a thick-bottomed pan for caramelizing, a good quality saucepan, a cast-iron pan, several well-seasoned baking sheets, silicone spatulas, etc.

The most important culinary ware for chefs, are knive sets. These should be of very fine quality. A good set will contain many types of knives and a stone for sharpening. Knives are the chef's tools of his/her trade.

Well balanced and good quality steel knife. There is nothing that substitute good knife for its fast and all around versatility. No mechanical kitchen ware can match it. But the knife has to be just right for you to use. Right weight, right handle, right thickness, right everything.

A Butchers knife is a necessity for a chef. They also need carving knives. A chef needs some tongs to flip things. A chef needs hot plates, and a thermometer to test the temp of the food they are cooking so that no one gets sick from under cooked food.

Chefs need several tools in the kitchen. The most important tool that a chef needs is a good chefs knife. Make sure the knife is forged carbon steel. You will also need a sharpener or a wet stone to keep the blade sharp. Heavy pots are also a must.

All you need to be a good chef are a good knife and a good pan. Everything else will just get in the way. If you can handle the knife properly and keep it sharp, you can do anything.

The absolute most essential item is a quality chef's knife and a steel with which to hone it. Other useful items are a small paring knife and a quality serrated knife.
