Many Japanese cartoons were popular in the 1980s. Speedracer was based on a Japanese cartoon, and Dragon Ball Z is technically an 80s cartoon because it began production in 1989. My all time favorite Japanese cartoon is Astroboy. The box set includes some episodes in the original Japanese language. The theme song is also a classic!

Doraemon is a cheerful cartoon for children. The main character is a robotic cat who has access to many wonderful technological inventions. Sazae-san is another cartoon series for children. It deals with a family, including a woman named Sazae-san and generations above and below her. Both Doraemon and Sazae-san are popular cartoons from the 1980s.

My favorite was "The Last Unicorn"-- it was animated in Japan and dubbed in English with voices by Jeff Bridges and Mia Farrow, I think. It's a tearjerker!
