"Sea Monkeys" as they are sold are a form of brine shrimp or 'Artemia salina'. The term Sea Monkey was originally coined in the early 1960s.

Sea monkeys are living animals sold for children that grow in water. They are also a type of tiny brine shrimp that live in water, named sea monkeys because of their appearance. Sea monkeys were conceived in 1960 as a biological novelty. They are in a natural state of suspended animation, which allows them to grow very quickly.

Sea Monkeys are freeze dried Brine Shrimp eggs. When you put them in water the eggs "wake up" and hatch. The little creatures you see swimming around are adult shrimp.
