A caustic chemical is a substance that damages surfaces and living tissue. It can be either an acid or base. Caustic acids corrode by donating protons (such as in oxidation) while caustic bases such as Lye erode by accepting protons.

As example of a base is the sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as caustic soda or lye. Among the caustic acids are sulfuric acid H2SO4, hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3).
