Was there some kind of landmark court case in California that decided that alcoholism is a disease?

No, alcoholism is not a disease because it cannot be caught and isn't contagious. Alcoholism is exclusively hereditary and is in no sense a disease. Alcohol, like any drug, is an addiction that runs in a cycle of mental and physical dependence that makes one crave and "need" the substance to feel normal. People who have alcoholism are addicts.

As I recall yes. On the website there was a individual who was ordered to go to AA. Since AA does say the Serenity Prayer, the individual sort ot contended that it was forced religion, being put on theirselves.
