Should you say that something is a "component to" or a "component of?"

Both sound awkward.

One should say something is a "component of" because in that idea, component is the same as the word "part;" in English, we say something is a part of something else.

"Component of" is the better usage, since the component is part of a larger whole. Of course, "part of" sounds much better, anyway, and would generally be preferable.
