Should I invite the officiating pastor to my wedding reception?

Is it proper to invite the pastor to the reception as a guest? Do I send him an invitation?

Yes, it is proper etiquette to invite the officiating pastor to the wedding reception. In addition, his or her spouse should be invited as well. Not only that, but they should be invited by written invitation to not only the wedding and reception, but also to any rehearsal dinner held before the wedding.

It is important to invite the pastor including a guest of his or her choice. It is also important to let the pastor know that you will understand if he or she cannot make the reception. If seating is assigned, make sure the pastor is seated with interesting, up-beat people. Let the pastor know whether saying grace is expected.

Of course you should. The pastor is one of the most prominent participants in your wedding. It is only common courtesy to invite the pastor.

It is tradition to do so, especially if you know the pastor. However this is not set in stone. If you do invite, some may come and stay a short while, others may decline all invitations as a matter of principle (since they can't go to all and don't want to be seen as playing favourites).

If the pastor is a long time family friend then he should be invited to the reception. If he is a recent acquaintence, it is not necessary to invite him.
