It depends on where you live. In areas where there isn't much snow and ice, there is no need to buy the shield. They are designed to keep your roof from wedging apart due to freezing and thawing in the colder months. This would be a worth while investment in colder areas.

It's not uncommon for rain or ice to backup under the bottom few rows of shingles during downpours or cold months. Ice and water shield will prevent water penetration.

Yes because in freezing weather it keeps melting ice from damning up and finding a way through the roof on the lower end.

I wouldn't recommend it. I have found they don't work as well as they would like you to think they do and require an entire overhaul of your roof.

Yes an ice and water shield is a good thing for the roof. It will prevent ice damming and a potentioal leaking roof.

You should invest in an ice and water shield if you don't want damage in a few years. The ice and water shield will protect the most vulnerable parts of the roof, such as the chimney and vent areas. Otherwise, you'll probably have to replace these areas before the rest of the roof.

If the house is located in an area that is known for freezing cold and high winds, or is located in valleys, than having a shield installed may be an option to consider; however it's not generally recommended to purchase. It will not cease leaks to be created, and the majority opinion is that it is a waste of money.
