Once you are a policeman, how long to make detective?

Every police department has its own rules so it's difficult to generalize. As a rule of thumb, it will take three to five years in large departments with plenty of advancement opportunities and merit promotions. In smaller departments or departments with little turnover, it can take ten years or more.

There are several factors involved. There must be openings in the ranks. The patrol officer must be worthy, have a good record and meet all the requirements. Some officers make detective after only a few years; other might stay on patrol for 25 years before applying for a spot as an investigator.

Additionally, you have to complete an exam with a high enough score. Generally you are looking at 4 to 5 years minimum.

Well as a former Police Officer, I can tell you that it could take many years to become a Detective. It all depends on your record, the work you perform and any outside classes you obtain to even apply for the position. And of course the position has to be open to even apply for the chance to become one.

This can vary greatly. It all depends on how well you do. Some people can probably do it five years, but closer to ten is more likely. it all depends and there are tests too.
