Talk to your neighbor first about resolving the issue. A lawsuit will only result in an order to fill up the hole and replace the grass if there was any. Unless you can show monetary harm in the matter, there's nothing to gain in a court action.

You cannot sue for them digging a hole. You can sue if it damaged your water line, sewer connection, gas line, electrical connection or killed plants on your property. You may want to find out why they were digging the hole. If it was due to mischief, then you could file trespass and criminal mischief charges.

If you did not give hime permission to do then yes you can. However before you do make sure that the hole is not on his side. Try and get the precise location of your property line before you file.

In theory, you probably could, but how much damage do you really have? The cost of litigation is likely to be more than you would recover.
