Bonsai trees and their leaves stay small not because they grow that way, but rather do to meticulous trimming and pruning by its owner. If you are interested in purchasing a bonsai tree be sure to look up the proper way to care for it so that it doesn't become overgrown.

The reason that bonsai are small is because their growth has been stunted by forced malnutrition. This is also why bonsai need to be taken care of meticulously.

The leaves remain petite because the entire tree is genetically prone to this size. Also, having the tree planted in a small pot helps limit it's growth.
