My husband had cancer and had a massive amount of radiation on his chest and lower jaw. This was 6 years ago and he still experiences a dull pain in this chest area. He did have a chest x-ray and it was clear. The doctor said this is normal, but will take a long time to heal.

Side effects of radiation therapy to the chest usually include reddness and soreness of the skin. Loss of chest hair can occur. Fatigue is a frequent side effect. Problems swallowing and decreased appetite can occur due to esphagus exposure to radiation. Rib pain is not usually mentioned as a side effect but could be. Consult your doctor for any effects.

It is possible that pain in your organs is generalizing to your rib area. Because we are not accustomed to feeling pain in our internal organs, the pain appears as if it is coming from the ribs or chest muscles. If the pain gets really bad, talk to your doctor.
