Question by  Anonymous

Is it unsafe to keep the door between my garage and home open?

My garage gets late afternoon sun, and sometimes it is warmer than the rest of the house. I am tempted to open the door to let some of the warm air into the house, but I am worried that some unhealthy fumes from the garage will come into the house.

I don't think you should worry about any unhealthy fumes unless your garage is atypical. As long as you do not leave your car running in the garage you should be fine. However, I might lock the door for safety due to intruders not harmful fumes. Just as a precaution.

If you don't have cars constantly running in the garage or open paint cans or paint remover containers there really isn't any danger

If I am at home and am constantly moving about the house, I don't feel the need to bother with making sure my garage door is locked.

The best way to ensure safety is too install a carbon monoxide detector in the room off of the garage. That way you can keep it open and still have your safety. Also you should probably never leave it open in there is a running car inside of it, because that is when it gets really dangerous.

As long as you are not running your car in the garage with the door closed you should not have to worry about fumes coming into your home. If you are still concerned, let your garage air out for a few minutes when you get home, before you put the garage door down.
