Is it true that all birds can fly?

Which can't, if any? I think I heard penguins can't, but they are classified as a bird.

There are a number of flightless birds, classified by scientists as Ratites. The prime examples of these birds are the ostriches, Kiwis,Cassowaries and Emus. It seems that birds, such as the New Zealand Kiwi probably lost the ability to fly as they had few known predators. Penguins are not classified as true Ratites because they use their "wings" to swim.

You're correct; penguins can't fly, and they're definitely birds. There are over 40 flightless species alive today that can't fly, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. Some of the best known include the ostrich, emu, and kiwi. Flightless birds tend to be swimmers/divers or runners. Unfortunately, because of their vulnerability, there are over 40 EXTINCT species in this category.
