Is it safe to take lamictal while breastfeeding?

I do not want to harm my baby in any way and would like to make sure this is a safe medication to take.

Lamictal will pass through breast milk to your nursing baby. There seems to be no definitive answer as to the effects of this medication on breastfed infants. My suggestion would be to check with your doctor before using any medication while breastfeeding. Quite often your doctor can prescribe an alternative that is safe for both you baby.

There are mixed opinions on whether or not Lamictal is safe for the baby while breastfeeding. The medication does pass into the breastmilk, but whether or not that is dangerous has not been decided. You will have to make this decision with your doctor.

I also have had taken lamictal in the past for my bipolar disorder. I was advised not to breast feed and to restart taking lamictal because it has a possibility of passing through your milk. Pumping and dumping also would not help because this medication stays in your body for 24 hours at least.

Lamictal(lamotrigine) is listed in most reference books as contraindicated in breastfeeding. It is easily absorbed into breastmilk and can reach therapeutic levels in nursing babies. You should always consult your physician and your baby's pediatrician concerning medications. There are often many different alternatives, often an older drug with a longer track record with mothers and babies will work for you.

this medicine can be passed into breastmilk and it is unsure what the risks are to the young child who is breastfeeding. It is recommended to check with your doctor or a Lactation Consultant regarding this medicine.
