Is it safe to put distilled water in a fish tank?

The water from my tap has a foul smell to it, as a result I would like to use distilled water in my tank but I want to make sure it is safe for the fish.

Distilled water is best for your fish. As a matter of fact if you use tap water without using a water conditioner to take the chlorine out of the water it is very probable that your fish will die. Definitely use distilled water instead of tap water unless you want to wake up to floating fish.

I've used distilled water in my fish tanks for years, off and on, and never had any problems. Bottled water in general seems to work just fine. It's tap that's the problem. Especially if it has a foul smell, never put straight city tap water in a fish tank. It has deadly chemicals in it that distilled does not.

I was taught that distilled water is perfectly fine for fish. It is preferred over tap water becasue it doesn't require water conditioner.
