Expect anything you send across the wire to be read, unless you do encrypt it and have the knowledge to ensure you encrypt all you don't want to reveal. Compared to "real life" any _real_ online friend will behave like a friend. But there are enemies out there, too.

Depend. Sometimes yes, but you have to be weary. Some people will hack your computer and send viruses. So do not give out any information (address, real name, etc). Do not accept any sort of files either.

Despite the horror stories, as long as you do not give out personal details including region, you should be fine. Even if you allow people to know what state you come from, as long as you do not reveal details like exact location, your name, your school or work place, and so on you should probably be okay.

Most people are not stalkers; nevertheless, you must always be prepared for the possibility. Enjoy new friends without giving out personal information. You don't have to be "nice" to everyone.

There are very good people out there in the world. But why should we share our information before trusting or seeing the other person and getting to know about him.
