Question by  deswar (23)

Is it possible to really be a functional alcoholic?

My brother swears he is a functioning alcoholic, I however believe he is not, as his habits effect others around him in a negative way.

Most alcoholics are high functioning. The stereotype of "in the gutter covered in your own vomit" is rare. Alcoholics are very careful to protect their public images, especially at work and with friends. "Functioning alcoholic" is not a good thing; he shouldn't boast. The AA website=great info.

I've seen many people function fine with alcohol in their system. However, the point is their is still alcohol in their system inhibiting their reaction to events, slowing their speech pattern, and creating a negative reaction to others. No amount of reasoning will get them to stop until they are ready to change themselves.

Sort of. I've known some people who are perfectly fine when they go to work or family functions but once they're on their own time they turn into terrible alcoholics.

Most alcoholics that say they are functional, don't realize how far from the truth they are. Though that is in part of all the alcohol that they are consuming on a frequent basis. The best place for you to get help for your brother is a program designed for this.

Yes. Just because you have a drinking problem, doesn't mean that you can't do day to day activities and jobs.
