Plaster is perfect for a shower. Use the right type on the right substrate and it's water and mold resistant naturally. Plaster has lime in it that makes the surface alkylin and molds won't grow. Done right you need no sealer or paint, both of which have a short life.

While a fully tiled shower area would obviously be ideal, as long as the walls have been thoroughly coated with water resistant enamel they should hold up perfectly well.

It depends on the kind of plaster. There is a kind of plaster board called "green board" that is designed for showers. It's not used much any more though. Cement board works better and is usually used. Conventional drywall or plaster does not provide a shield against water. Water may get in behind your wall causing mould or rot.

The top part of the shower wall can remain as plaster coated with a paint especially formulated for bathroom and kitchen. This paint has a water resistance built into it so water slides of and contains an anti-mold to stop the mold on walls. The bottom of the shower should be tiled as plaster would crumble over time.

Real plaster is waterproof so it could be used in a shower. But you really need to know what you are doing, how to apply the products and the correct products to use. If not the plaster will not hold up to the constant moisture in the bathroom which will cause big problems in the future.

nearly all of these answers are wrong... if you know what you are doing or know someone that does... plaster showers with proper waterproofing look great and are durable

No. Shower walls should be tile or plastic. Plaster walls will absorb moisture and allow for mold to grow on both sides of the wall.

Plaster is not appropriate for use as shower walls. Plaster is a porous material and therefore will swell on damp walls, once the plaster dries it flakes off. The health risks involved with using plaster is mold and mildew. Since not all plaster dries quickly and some may stay damp for months, plaster becomes impractical.

It is if you paint them with an oil based paint. That will help to keep moisture away from the plaster.
