Traditional houses use light (white or off white), but today it is acceptable to use the crown molding as an accent to the other colors in your home. If you are using deep rich tones then yes by all means use it on your crown moldings.

It depends on the size of the room you are painting the moldings in. Painting moldings dark in a small room will create a reduced-looking space, and less-openness. Also, it is harder to paint over dark shades.

It's not a bad idea. Just depends on your taste. Although it might make your house look more "outlined" like in a cartoon drawing.

It is better to paint crown molding a light shade because now the styles in a home are more contemporary and neutral. Darker colors on molding will make the room look like it has shorter walls which will give the room a smallermore dark and uninviting look. The foot boards also need to be light as well.

You should always leave moldings white unless you are trying to restore and older house and want to match the wood, in that case, stain them, never paint them.
