In the past, diesel was well known for being cheaper, more efficient, and dirtier then gas powered engines. Currently, diesel still burns dirtier. However, ULSD, or ultra low sulfur diesel, is a new version of diesel fuel looking to dispel all the old stigmas surrounding diesel fuel. Look for this to be available at a local gas-station in the near-future

Diesels found in newer vehicles are very clean but this is to to more efficient engines and new technology. Although older engine especially those running cheap fuel are very dirty. This is mainly do to the crude nature of the fuel itself. Bio-diesel on the other hand is extremely clean.
