Cotton and tobacco are still major crops produced in the American south. Cotton thrives in the hot, humid climate which the south provides. The crop is mechanically harvested with machines efficiently.

Yes, cotton is the number one value-added crop in the U.S. The U.S. is the third largest exporter of it. Part of the importance economically of cotton is due to all the business it helps stimulate through its manufacturer and services associated with it.
