Is common law marriage considered to be the same thing as legal marriage?

How do the two marriage types compare?

Different states have different laws. If you live together long enough in all states but CA, you can sue as if you were legally married if you separate.

As far as the courts are concerned, they are legally the same. However, you would have a harder time proving this for death benefits from the government.

Common law marriage varies from state to state. There is no legal difference between the two except how they come about, so there's no reason to worry about getting legally married if you're already common-law married. Best of luck with your relationship, wherever you choose to take it in the future!

not really there are only a few states that recognize common law marriage and the couple has to live together for seven years before it is recognized. regular marriage you go get a marriage license and have a piece of paper to show you are married.

in Canada evn erything is the same as marriage except when it comes to death. You cannot claim the partner's body and/or money if there is any living relatives that the government contacts. you have to have written proof of your years of living together. a will is not considered
