Is a Yamaha rectifier the same thing as a regulator?

I was told to replace one and then the other by another mechanic.

On all newer yamaha motorcycles and atvs the rectifier and regulator are combined called a rectifier/regulator. If its a charging problem check batt condition and stator output/insulation to ground

No; A rectifier converts AC/Alternating-Current (from your alternator) into DC/Direct-Current, Rectifiers are often built-into the alternator-body; A (voltage)regulator attempts to maintain a constant-voltage-level or at least limit it to not exceed a given-voltage (like 12VDC). Both rectifiers and (voltage)regulators drop the voltage, so alternator/rectified-voltages are higher than regulated/system-voltages.
