A lawyer's potential earnings can be much greater if a specialty such as tax or corporate law is pursued. However, the choice of physical location for a practice could void that potential; a general practice could offer much greater financial rewards in a small town.

As is true in many professions, when one specializes in a particular area he or she is in more demand and capable of serving a select audience. Attorneys who specialize - say in corporate law - are much more likely to earn a higher salary than a general attorney.
