Is 16 gauge thicker than 18 gauge sheet metal?

I don't understand the scale.

Yes, 16 gauge sheet metal is thicker than 18 gauge sheet metal. Metal is rolled through a press that gets thinner and thinner the further a gauge is turned. So, when the gauge is set of 16, it produces a thicker product than when it is set on 18.
